10 Most Formidable AI Enemies In Gaming

Being the debut title for Microsoft's first gaming system, Halo: Combat Evolved had much to prove.

The gameplay was a work of art, primarily because of the efficiency of hostile Covenant forces. Rather than running around guns blazing, the extra-terrestrial dirtbags utilise specific strategies for every type of interaction.

If you toss a grenade, they might lob it back. If you rely on defensive measures, they'll fire charged plasma shots to deplete your energy shields. To keep their position hidden, certain enemies don't attack until you get close.

However, none of these alien critters can compare to Elites. It's tough to overpower these highly intelligent fiends since they intuitively know when it's best to fight, hide, or retreat. They become more erratic and aggressive when they're on the fence, as a last-ditch effort to kill you. They prefer close-range combat, causing players to panic. Sneakiest of all, they sometimes cloak themselves and wait for you to approach before making the kill-shot.

Although the enemy combat has fittingly evolved since in later instalments, there's no question the original Halo's AI set the bar.
