Many of the kombatants in Mortal Kombat are based on iconic movies characters. Shang Tsung was inspired by Pan from Big Trouble in Little China, Kano from the Terminator, and Baraka from Nosferatu.

And since Kung Lao dons a razor-rimmed hat, you know he's going to channel the James Bond villain, Oddjob, by hurling it at his enemies. Even though it could've been a simple projectile weapon, the White Lotus warrior's hat has all sorts of uses. He can use it as a frisbee, a boomerang, ricochet it off objects, and pull a rabbit out of it to slaughter his enemies. (No, really.)

Of course, if you're going to give a character a bladed hat in a MK game, you HAVE to incorporate it into the Fatalities. Since his debut in MKII, the Shaolin monk has earned a reputation for having among the grisliest finishing moves ever.

Using his hat, he can split his rival in two, chopped them into pieces, or rip their head in half. His Razor Edge finisher in MK9 is regarded as one of thee goriest Fatalities in the series since he drags his opponent into his spinning hat's blade genitalia first.
