What can be said about GTA 3 that hasn't already been said? Grand Theft Auto 3 was a revolution in gaming. It was the first title make people feel free in a game. Like they could do anything they wanted. Wanted to drive a car? Go steal it and take a ride. See a cool building in the distance? You can go over to it. Want to deck every civilian you run by like a boxing maniac? You got it.

This freedom to commit as much mayhem as you want is historic for two reasons.

First, it inspired the open world genre. Secondly, it made a lot of people very angry. Critics came out from left and right against the game, saying it would corrupt the kids, encourage violence, and every other scary thing people that don't understand a thing will default to.

In fact, this game made giant retail chains start carding people who appeared too young to buy M Rated games.

It also introduced the gaming world to Jack Thompson, a lawyer and anti-video game activist who would speak out and get involved in multiple cases against Take-Two over GTA 3. Seeing games a public health hazard, he just kept going against them, and kept making himself look ridiculous, eventually being disbarred, years down the line.

GTA 3 changed the culture around games as a whole, and it earned every bit of acclaim it got.
