5. The Thing

The game version of John Carpenter's masterpiece had some ambitious game mechanics, but didn't really have the technology to support them. It pioneered a unique squad mechanic whereby you'd have to trust panicked - and possibly infected - NPCs with weapons, but invariably the system was easy to master, and supporting characters would "Thing-out" at scripted moments anyway.

Still, it managed to capture the tone of the movie, and even provided an answer for the famously bleak ending. The opening has the player exploring the destroyed camp, and finding the frozen body of Childs. Fast-forwarding to the end a mysterious helicopter arrives to help you defeat the final boss, and when that's done you find out who the pilot is; good old R.J. MacReady himself (not played by Kurt Russell, of course).

This last second twist leaves a lot of unanswered questions, like where has he been hiding and how did he survive the end of the original? These questions would have been answered in the sequel, but when the developer went belly up, the answers did too.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
