10 Most Overlooked Nintendo Games Ever
7. StarTropics / Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II
Chances are thay if someone asked you to name a Nintendo series, Startropics would be far from the front of their list. One of Nintendo’s more obscure franchises, these action-adventure games were designed for a western audience, only releasing across North America and Europe in 1990. Focusing on the adventures of Mike Jones, the original game saw you investigating the disappearance of his archaeologist uncle, Dr Steven Jones.
Travelling across the C-Islands via Submarine, StarTropics is reminiscent of the first Legend of Zelda game but contains a much stronger focus on puzzle solving. As you traverse the islands, you’ll explore various dungeons, armed with a yo-yo, slingshot and baseball bat. It’s a silly affair, with each island being named after cola, but proved successful enough to warrant a sequel, arriving in 1994 as Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II on NES.
Zoda’s Revenge moved away from the tropical island setting, seeing Mike travel across time and visiting different eras such as Ancient Egypt, Middles Ages and Victorian England, meeting famous figures like Cleopatra and Sherlock Holmes along the way. It fell victim to poor timing, releasing three years after the SNES launch and became widely ignored. They hold up well to this day though, proving to be charming adventures, so these come recommended.
