6. Disaster: Day Of Crisis
Considering Monolith Soft’s best known for their RPG background with Baten Kaitos, Xenogears and Xenoblade Chronicles, Disaster: Day of Crisis stands out as an oddity in their long history. Featuring a similar premise to Disaster Report, the game mixes surviving natural disasters with battling terrorists and rescuing civilians. Switching between driving, quick time events, third person exploration and rail shooter segments, it landed on the Wii in 2008 to a muted response.
You play as Raymond Bryce, a former US Marine turned International Rescue Team Member. After the sudden death of his partner Steve on a routine mission, Raymond quits the Rescue Team but one year later, discovers that terrorist group SURGE has kidnapped Steve’s sister. Vowing to rescue Lisa, Raymond then looks to take down SURGE with the US Government, all in the midst of a natural disaster.
It received average reviews at launch and poor sales across Japan and Europe caused Nintendo to cancel the North American release but it’s not without its merits. Providing an interesting mix of gameplay styles that kept proceedings varied, it had some interesting concepts at work but could've benefitted from further refinement.
