10 Most Overlooked Nintendo Games Ever
5. Super Princess Peach
Damsel in Distress is one of the oldest conventions in media and few gaming franchises better exemplify it than Super Mario Bros, following Mario's adventures as he rescues Princess Peach. 21 years after the original NES game, Nintendo decided to reverse this trope in Super Princess Peach on the DS, seeing her take the starring role for the first time since the Game & Watch-era.
Developed by Tose, the game sees Peach travel to Vibe Island to rescue Mario and Luigi, both of whom were captured by Bowser. Role reversal aside, it’s a spin-off which otherwise plays similarly to other 2D platformers, set across eight worlds with six levels each and a boss battle. It utilises an emotion meter alongside the traditional heart gauge. These emotions affect everyone on Vibe Island but Peach is able to change her emotions at all between joy, rage, calm and gloom and these activate different abilities.
Filled with a variety of unlockables, such as mini games, a music room and bonus levels, it’s a competent spin-off to the Mario franchise and released to positive reception but was commonly criticised for lack of difficulty, with many reviews finding a lack of challenge to Super Princess Peach. It may not be as obscure as the rest of the list, but it's certainly a footnote in the wider Mario universe.
