By refusing to offer their video games for review Bethesda has now handicapped two great games two years in a row. Like Doom before it, this year's Prey was dropped in a sea of uncertainty, as customers unable to gauge the quality of the title decided to wait it out rather than jump straight into the deep end, no doubt picking up one of the other million brilliant games to choose from so far in 2017 instead.

But Prey is definitely worth your time, simply because it's unlike any other first-person shooter on the market. Well, at least on the current market, as Bethesda's divisive reboot has more in common with the likes of System Shock 2 than it does Battlefield or Call of Duty.

Letting you roam an abandoned space station in the midst of an alien outbreak, Prey's focus on building a character equipped enough to deal with the station's array of puzzles and enemies champions a sense of freedom rarely seen in the genre, while the sci-fi plot itself offers enough original ideas to allow it stand out from its biggest influences.

It's a game that just isn't made for consoles anymore, which is why it's such a shame that Prey so far hasn't enjoyed the success it deserves for daring to do something different.
