10 Most Overlooked Video Games Of 2017 (So Far)

1. Nier: Automata

Unless you were one of the five people to play the original a few years ago, Nier: Automata pretty much took everyone for surprise when it released earlier this year. An oddball open-world RPG that's about existential crises as much as it is hacking through robots as stylishly as possible, Automata isn't the most technically accomplished game on this list, but it's certainly the one with the most character.

Distinctly Japanese in both presentation and themes, the title has a knack for sucking you into its ridiculous yet surprisingly poignant world. Using initially familiar gameplay to elegantly detail and expand on its apocalyptic plot, Nier flippantly plays with video game conventions that fans have come to take for granted, never running out of surprises during its lengthy 30-hour run-time.

On the surface it doesn't seem like a game that would demand your attention, but if you're still on the fence about Nier (or just missed it because you were too busy playing Horizon or Mass Effect in March instead) then it's time to finally pick up the year's finest game.
