If you've played one Yakuza game you've pretty much played them all, but that doesn't mean you should miss out on this year's excellent prequel, Yakuza 0.

Primed with a plot that makes great use of its period setting, Yakuza 0 is full of the explosive action you'd expect from a title set in the heart of Tokyo's criminal underworld, yet it's what happens in between these bombastic set-pieces that makes the prequel so memorable.

When you're not beating up thugs in alleyways or chasing them down in high speed pursuit you'll find yourself investing in the neighbourhood's real estate and businesses, spending your hard-earned cash to cement your influence over the city and upgrade your character.

And if you need a break from smashing skulls and running the city you can always chill out and try the local cuisine or engage in a bit of karaoke. Even these seemingly inconsequential activities are much more exciting - and much weirder - than they have any right to be.
