10 Most Promising New Video Game IPs Coming In 2016

5. Horizon: Zero Dawn (PS4)

What happens when you let Guerrilla Games - developers of the solid-yet-unimaginative Killzone series - off their creative leash and set them to work on a new PlayStation 4 IP? A stunning action-adventure set in a lush post-apocalyptic world populated with giant mechanised dinosaurs, it would seem. Horizon Zero Dawn sees you control Aloy, a hunter who must use her wits, stealth skills, bow, and extraordinary agility to survive the wilderness and scavenge metal from the robotic beasts she topples. Guerrilla have been keen to emphasise the game's RPG elements, such as an open world to explore, optional side-quests and a degree of weapon-crafting, but Horizon's core focus seems to be on offering players myriad ways to take down the robo-dinos that roam the world. You can set up explosive trip-wires, for example, then fire into a herd of lightweight raptor-like robots and watch them run into your trap. Alternatively, you can sneak up behind creatures and take them down quietly, or even engage in all-out combat against the kind of creatures that could easily have a bright future as Metal Gear bosses if Aloy didn't kill them in Horizon. With its fusion of RPG-lite and action gameplay, and unique tribal-futuristic presentation, Horizon is one of the prettiest-looking games of the year. Here's hoping it plays as great as it looks...
