10 Most Promising Nintendo Switch Exclusives Of 2018
8. Project Octopath Traveller
Right then, onto bonafide new IP, and Project Octopath Traveller (yup, we're really running with that) is the first new game from Acquire - the phenomenally well-tracking devs that brought you Tenchu and Way of the Samurai, to name but two.
For POT, gameplay is strictly old-school, playing with the same instant lovability of a late 90s/early 2000s RPG. Aesthetically we've got 3D modelled sprites and environments, but the general feel is distinctly retro, mashing together early PS1-looking levels with pixellated heroes from the SNES. It's a great, instantly memorable and warmly nostalgic look - one benefitted by a free demo on the eShop letting everyone in on a few hours of play.
The biggest takeaway is how snappy the combat feels, letting you roll over certain moves whenever it's your turn to build up multipliers later on. Different weapons work better against different foes, and each character comes with their own specials and unique ways to approach battle.
Somewhat simple and a foregone conclusion on paper, Project Octopath is a frontrunner for the best RPG of the year.
