Back in 2001, a little game called Halo: Combat Evolved was chosen to be one of the launch titles for the first Xbox console. The other launch titles, Dead or Alive 3 and Project Gotham racing, went on to sell over a million copies each. Halo sold over five million copies in its first four years of release.

Halo: Combat Evolved spawned not only a brand new billion-dollar franchise, but a new interest in first person shooter games, specifically in those with Sci-Fi elements.

The game's larger than life narrative was emotional and engaging, and the game's score was epic. Halo's gameplay mechanics were smooth, easy to master and appealed to gamers of all ages, and its success was well-deserved and well documented.

It's rare to find someone who hasn't at least heard of the Halo franchise, as for a number of years the word "Halo" was practically synonymous with gaming, particularly when playing online with friends.

Playing through Halo and its sequels remains as satisfying and as rewarding as ever, even 19 years on.
