8. Mother Brain - Super Metroid

One of the earliest examples of storytelling done directly through gameplay, the final fight in Super Metroid is unbelievably intense, and comes with small bouts of the game taking control away from you, only to deliver some awesome twists and turns.

See, you're up against Mother Brain - a dastardly evil monstrosity that wants to murder everything. Despite having to slog your way through a facility to kill her first form, you then battle a dinosaur-looking mutation as a second form, that ultimately bests Samus with a multi-coloured laser blast.

It's here where you're left to watch Samus die. Her life drains from the top-left of the screen, and Mother Brain salivates at the prospect of eating her alive.

Right at this moment your former enemy Metroid appears, attaches itself to Mother Brain, steals her potent energy and... transfers it directly into your arm cannon.

You then get the euphorically enjoyable rush of blasting the living hell out of Mother Brain; seeing it reel with every hit, before a countdown timer means you have to evade multiple explosions for the final sprint back to the surface.
