Shenmue III made history when it was announced - well, its Kickstarter was announced - in front of the whole world on Sony's stage at E3 2015. The funding goal was set at $2 million, one of the largest at the time (but a far cry from the $70 million production budget of the previous entries in the series), a target which it more than half achieved in a mere 44 minutes.

In the end the project went on to become the most successful Kickstarted video game in the website's history, pulling in a massive $6 million. Of course, the crowd funding didn't end just because the Kickstarter did, and through other programmes as well as PayPal donations, the team scraped another $600,000 for a $6.6 million total.

The fruits of that success are still yet to be seen, with only a couple of new screenshots and the occasional development update being offered since the sequel was put into full production. At this point, Shenmue III has a lot to prove when it allegedly drops later this year, especially if the studio want to go through with creating a fourth instalment in the franchise.
