1. Star Citizen

Although $6.6 million might seem like a ridiculous amount to raise through crowd-funding alone, Star Citizen's drive makes that number look like chump change. It didn't break any records on Kickstarter alone, initially gaining a respectable $2.2 million haul after only asking for $500,000, but the team had bigger plans than just one fundraising campaign.

The promise of the title, which is attempting to create one of the most expansive space trading and combat MMOs ever, gained an impressive amount of publicity thanks to word-of-mouth advertising, and ever since its initial announcement in 2012, has continued to rake in millions every single year from different crowd-funding sources.

Rocketing to success, the title hit its stride in 2015, 2016 and 2017, reliably bringing in around £35 million every single year. As of writing, Star Citizen has raised over $150 million, giving it a larger budget than most AAA titles.

Of course, a game like this needs a budget on that scale, and after multiple delays it finally seems to be coming together. There's still no end date in sight, but with a single-player campaign also being worked on called Squadron 42, whenever Star Citizen does release, it's going to be huge.
