10 Most Successful Crowdfunded Video Games Of All Time

9. Chronicles Of Elyria

Despite gaining almost $3.4 million across multiple crowd-funding websites - with over $1 million coming from Kickstarter alone - the development of Chronicles of Elyria has mostly been kept in the dark.

The ambitious, persistent MMO's unique twist on the regular high-fantasy RPG formula is that you actually get to play through the entire life of your character. Your avatar ages and dies, and instead of finding satisfaction in being the leader of the realm or stopping the end of the world, the idea is to find reward in the small victories you accomplish during your finite amount of time.

The aims of the title are actually quite noble, attempting to solve the problems of other entries in the genre. Aiming to get rid of the grind, give players a worthwhile story and not tie their destiny to waypoint markers, the team is using the money to revolutionise how MMORPGs are made.

Development hasn't been easy, but after a series of layoffs earlier the year, production on the title is said to be stable, moving full-steam ahead for a hopeful release in the not-too-distant future.
