The battle of developing a great Batman game can be won or lost depending on whether developers nail the world of the superhero, and fortunately, Batman Returns is the best representation of the Tim Burton movie universe to ever hit consoles. Dark, moody and all topped off with a gorgeous gothic art style, the lush presentation of Batman Returns perfectly translates the dreary comic book world of the Caped Crusader into a striking 16-bit style.

And while the combat is pretty typical of your average NES side-scroller, the world is so detailed and enemies so varied that it feels as though you're playing a much more complex game than you actually are.

Michael Keaton's Batman rarely ever gets the chance it deserves in the spotlight, yet this movie tie-in expertly nails the physicality and menace of the character in a way that no other game ever did.

Plus, there are some epic driving sequences which hold up considerably well when you take into account how infamously awful similar sections from the same era could be, nailing a great sense of speed that results in high-risk vehicular combat that keeps these Batmobile missions feeling genuinely impressive to this day.
