10 Most Underrated Horror Monsters In Video Games

2. Hoffman - Rule Of Rose

Many of the best monsters symbolise a very real fear. In Rule of Rose, Hoffman - headmaster of the orphanage the game takes place in - personifies the fear that the same people entrusted with looking after children are the ones least deserving of that responsibility.

Rule of Rose is a tricky game to discuss, as many facets of its plot are open to interpretation. One thing that the game makes abundantly clear, though, is that Hoffman has been sexually abusing at least two of the children in his care. The scene of him caressing a weeping student is skin-crawling enough, but later on the game heavily implies that his "favourite student" has had an abortion.

Hoffman acts as an all-too-believable embodiment of an all-too-common evil, and is one of gaming's most uncomfortably realistic villains as a result.
