10 Most Underrated Mega Drive & Genesis Games Ever

2. Capt'n Havoc - Data East (1993)

Data East

When the anthropomorphic mascot platformer craze was in full swing, developers weren't afraid to dig deep into the encyclopedia to find a worthy animal for their title. Capt'n Havoc opted for a pirate-clad seal for theirs.

Another game with a plethora of names depending on where you live (Captain Lang in Japan, Cpat'n Havoc in Europe and High Seas Havoc everywhere else), Capt'n Havoc was actually an arcade game first that had been ported to the Mega Drive.

While it certainly takes design cues from Sonic (few platformer games of the era didn't), it also brings enough charm and character to the table to be memorable on its own.

Sadly it released to very little fanfare, and in the hierarchy of gaming mascots, remains fairly obscure despite being an enjoyable experience start to finish.

Jason Russell has been working in video game journalism since the early 1990s before the internet existed, the term "fanzine" had meaning and sailors still debated as to whether or not the earth was flat. The first time. More recently he has been the guy responsible for the Retrospective column for Old School Gamer Magazine, pens up a Game Skinny column on a plethora of video game topics. He's somehow managed to author nine novels, writes and runs the blog CG Movie Review, is co-founder of the science fiction publishing house Starry Eyed Press, and sometimes, when the planets align and the caffeine has fully left his system, it's rumored he sleeps.
