5. Splatoon (Wii U)
Making a rare venture out of the Mario or Zelda universe cash-cows, Nintendo made this delightful third-person-painter for the Wii U, which has been regretfully yet inevitably overlooked because of its existence solely on the Wii U. It's not quite worth buying a whole new console for, but if you are one of the Wii U faithful, then it's worth a look. The goal of the game is to run around an arena and use your paintgun to splatter as much of the level in your team's colour as possible. You pick up paint-based versions of classic guns such as gatling guns, sniper rifles and shotguns around the arena, and can also shoot members of the enemy team to help give yourself the upper hand. Splatoon is Nintendo's whimsical, light-hearted answer to squad-based shooters like Battlefield Hardline and Rainbow Six Siege. The action is fast-paced, delightfully chaotic, and best enjoyed online when played with seven other people across a range of painterly versions of classic game modes like Splat Zones (king of the hill), Rainmaker (Capture the Flag) and Tower Control. This is a great example of Nintendo proving, once again, that it's capable of far more than refining its established franchises, and makes you wish they pushed the boat out like this more often.
