Deep, complex, and filled with a huge amount of readable lore that enriches the game world tenfold, Pillars of Eternity is an old-school RPG that definitely isn't for everyone, but that's worthy of being played by anyone claiming to be a fan of the genre. With its isometric perspective, gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds, and tactical semi-real-time combat system, it harks back hard to the days when Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate were what people thought of when the word 'RPG' was mentioned. Which race, class and creed you choose for your hero at the start of the game will have an impact on how characters in the world interact with you, and your choices throughout the game will have an impact on later events - up to and including the ending. The combat is less convoluted than that of Pillars' inspirations, but still rich and strategic in a way that can be tough for you to grasp, but is extremely satisfying once you do. Developed by Obsidian (Fallout: New Vegas, Wasteland 2), Pillars of Eternity was made by veterans of the RPG genre, and is a brilliantly-crafted tribute to the origins of the genre on PCs, while providing a well thought-out interface and mechanical tweaks to make it more accessible to newcomers. If you want to see what all the hype is about with old-school RPGs, and why they've been going through a resurgence recently, then this brilliant little gem is your answer.
