What is humanity? Is it defined by our consciousness, our bodies, or a little bit of both? That's the question at the heart of this psychological, existential horror games from the makers of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The action takes place at an abandoned research facility deep on the ocean floor, where remnants of the otherwise extinct human race attempt to survive amidst the creatures that lurk in the lab, and the creaky old robots that have slowly gained human levels of consciousness over the years. Playing Soma, you'll recognise many of its seminal ancestor's features, as you'll spend much of your time cowering in dark corners and running away from creatures that you're almost never going to see because staring one in the face essentially means you're as good as dead. But Soma is way more than just 'sci-fi Amnesia', and offers the player plenty of food for thought as well as good old-fashioned jump scares and an overbearing feeling of helplessness. It's 'intelligent horror' of the sort we've rarely seen Silent Hill 2, and it deserves more attention than it's got so far. Buy SOMA at GOG
