10 Most Unexpectedly Powerful Video Game Villains
3. Tohru Adachi - Persona 4
Behind the veil of upbeat J-pop and wacky school shenanigans that is Persona 4 lies a dark and rather twisted plot involving shadow monsters, alternate worlds, and a couple of murders that drives it all forward.
The player follows along as their party slowly begins to unravel the mystery via the powers of friendship and anime, and the question that haunts them throughout the entire game is: who could have killed these women? Worse, who could have been powerful enough to do so in this alternate world?
So it's a massive shock when it turns out to actually be the bumbling fresh-faced detective from out of town.
Yes, when Adachi turns out to be the murderer it is a dramatic twist in the narrative. If this were a normal murder mystery all would be fine, he'd be arrested, taken to court, and tried like every other killer. Instead, Adachi hops into the TV world and reveals he too has a Persona, and somehow after around 80 hours of grinding at this point, it's stronger than all of your party combined.
Cue one of the final boss battles and a previously rather impotent man wiping the floor with a bunch of teenagers like it's nothing.
