10 Most WTF Video Game Reboots
6. Syndicate (2012)
Syndicate was a 1993 RPG/strategy game that was truly unlike anything released before or since.
In a world run by mega corporations, the player controlled a small team of agents enforcing the interests of their parent company. Missions took place on open maps that involved a variety of objectives, from assassination, extraction, recruitment, riot suppression and more. The player progressed through the game by claiming new territory and managing funds to pay for upgrades. The series vanished after an expansion pack and one sequel.
That is, until 2012, when Syndicate finally made its glorious return!
As a linear, story-based, first-person shooter.
Syndicate (2012) wasn't a bad game by any means. Developed by Starbreeze, it was actually an excellent shooter, packed with style. But other than guys in black coats killing each other in the the future, it didn't share anything with the original Syndicate that it doesn't also share with every other piece of Cyberpunk.
The multiplayer did skew a tiny bit closer to the original formula, as four players had to work cooperatively together to achieve certain objectives. But that was still a very far cry from what fans wanted.
For all this had to do with the original game, they could have made just about anything and slapped the name Syndicate on it.
