Moving away from the early years of headache-inducing virtual reality and into the prospectively far more exciting realm of the third person shooter with Gamer, the sci-fi thriller starring Gerard Butler as the actor desperate to kick start his action movie career at all costs. This time he plays John "Kable" Tillman, the highest ranking player in the violent game Slayers. Anyone going in to Gamer expecting a movie rich in characterisation and intricate in plotting deserves to be completely disappointed. Gamer is about as unsophisticated as movies come; an excuse for one action set piece after another and little else. Unfortunately the action is pretty terrible, which is a bad thing when that's the only thing you're basing a movie's appeal on. Still, some gamers love mindless action with the occasional gratuitous boob shot, so there's an audience for Gamer after all.
