10 Multiplayer Video Games RUINED By Microtransactions

9. Fallout 76

Bethesda

Fallout 76 did not exactly impress when it first landed on shelves in 2018. In fact, it's fair to say Bethesda's latest foray into the wasteland dropped with all the grace and style of a limbless, irradiated elephant.

Still, after a shaky start, it developed a devoted fanbase who enjoyed the MMORPG enough to put up with the myriad of bugs (*ahem* features) that Bethesda's games have become infamous for.

Everything was swell in post apocalyptic Virginia, until a year later, when Bethesda announced a yearly subscription, shooting themselves in the foot without the use of VATS.

Players immediately rebelled, and battle-lines were drawn, pitting a majority of protestors against a minority who supported the decision. This dystopian "Haves" and "Have Nots" situation, while thematically on-brand, ruined any opportunity for actual gameplay, and reduced the wasteland to a financial free-for-all. Players willing to fork out the exorbitant subscription prices suddenly had a clear advantage over those who weren't.

Bases were built, like ivory towers stretching up to clear green skies, sending a stark message to those who wouldn't (or couldn't) afford the extra cash: you want to have fun here? Buy it. The snarky Reddit posts didn't help either.
