10 Mundane But Incredibly Useful Items In Dungeons And Dragons

5. Bell And String

Available in the Burglar’s pack, these two items can be any suspicious person’s best friend. Just like the hammer and pitons, these items are sold separately, but I can’t imagine a shop where you can’t buy them. Unless the villain of your game is some sort of string baron.

The best and most obvious uses for these two items is for security. Camping out at night? You’ve got an alarm system ready to go. Trying to get a long rest in a cave? Set this up in the tunnel as an early warning system. Sleeping in a strange town that is definitely being controlled by a cult? Then better set this up near the door and windows just to be safe. These two simple items are your first line of defence.

Of course, these items can be used for a number of other reasons. The bell can be used to signal your friend and call for help, whereas, the string can be used for a multitude of tricks and traps. For around 2GP these two items could be a more important investment than that next health potion.
