10 MUST-PLAY Video Game Spin-Offs
4. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance or Metal Gear Solid: Rising as it was first known, was the biggest spin-off undertaking for the franchise in the early 2010s. Originally the plan was to make Rising in-house at Kojima Productions but due to difficulties in crafting a game focused around swordplay, the project was put on hold and would eventually be transferred to PlatinumGames, the masters of flashy, over-the-top action games. What we got in 2013 was by far the best side-story in the Metal Gear series.
Ditching the serious tone for an insanely over-the-top affair, Revengeance is an incredibly satisfying hack-and-slash title. It puts Raiden in the starring role, with his powerful cyborg exoskeleton charging through the levels, slashing through enemies left and right. This kind of rapid action was something fans had asked for ever since playing as Grey Fox in the Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions back on the PlayStation and it delivered in spades.
In addition, it was also a breath of fresh air from the complicated machinations of the mainline Metal Gear games, as Revengeance embraced a campy, non-sensical plot that kept the entertainment flowing. With Konami holding the license however, a sequel is still a long way off.
