While it's not an especially well-known fact, the Legend of Zelda - along with a sneaky bit of assistance from Mario - popularised the concept of a new game plus, before that label really even existed in gaming.

Should you manage to beat the classic game for the first time, it would give you the option to play through a second adventure with your boy Link. This part of the game wasn't even supposed to exist initially - as it was only when the developers realised they'd only used half of their cartridge space that they decided to craft a little extra.

And what extra they did craft was devilishly hard. Not only does it require far more precision dodging and attacking on your part, but you can also permanently lose your heart containers if you make a wrong move. As in, you lose both your heart, and the ability to ever get that many hearts ever again.
