10 New Game Plus Modes That Changed EVERYTHING

2. Understand The Shade's Speech - Nier

The Quiet Man Thumb
Platinum Games

After suffering the heartbreak that is your first ending of Nier - where you discover you are basically a robot, and that the monsters you've been fighting are humans, and also often children - you likely probably want answers.

Answers come in replaying the game, but they don't come automatically. In fact, you only gain one upgrade of sorts - an ability to understand what the "shades" are saying - which comes from the fact that you are now equipped with the knowledge they are human spirits.

And suddenly there's an extra layer of awkwardness, as you hear the enemies you are beating down sadly berate you for murdering countless scores of infant humans. But you still have to fight them, and you still have to kill them - just now with a profound sense of guilt hanging around.

But there's also a good chance that you've felt so awkward at points in the game that this feeling has just melted away, leaving your new game plus experience feeling sort of like becoming a supervillain - only a supervillain who didn't realise they were one until recently.
