10 No-Brainer Video Game Sequels That DIDN'T Get Made

Of the many action RPGs on the market, Alpha Protocol stood out from its contemporaries. It was a title no one had undertaken before, an espionage RPG. But due to multiple development problems and overstepping on the budget, the game arrived in 2010 to a mostly negative critical reception.

Alpha Protocol may have been a flop both critically and commercially, but the ambition was there. Buried beneath all its problems was an incredibly deep and dynamic set of character interactions that changed greatly through player choice. Obsidian had plans to expand this and create a more Tarantino-esque style for the sequel.

Unfortunately, it was not to be as SEGA cancelled these plans. As the publisher still owns the licence, the developer is unable to produce AP2 without their permission. Going back further, the cancellation also came down to Disney as well; with Obsidian's cancelled "Dwarves" RPG, they had to hurriedly negotiate a project they had long wanted to work on. This led to selling the rights to Alpha Protocol to SEGA.

With over a decade having passed and the digital version having been removed from Steam due to music licenses expiring, the prospects of an Alpha Protocol sequel are now further away than ever. The best we can hope for is that Microsoft gives the studio more free rein over their future projects.
