10 Obvious Video Game Traps (You Walked Into Anyway)

6. Mr. X's Choice - Streets Of Rage

Tomb Raider Anniversary
Sega

Make it to the eighth and final stage of classic beat 'em up Streets of Rage and you'll come face-to-face with the game's final boss, fearsome crime boss Mr. X.

However, before you can get down to fisticuffs, Mr. X will offer the player a "choice," to instead join him as his right-hand man.

Clearly, you're not supposed to accept Mr. X's offer, but even knowing a bad outcome likely awaits, the curiosity to investigate is nevertheless overpowering.

And so, those who decide to join the villain's ranks will, shockingly enough, find themselves suddenly betrayed by Mr. X, who opens a trap door which ejects the player out of the stage.

This sends the player back to the sixth stage, forcing them to fight their way back through the two previous levels to return to him.

While this trap certainly could've been even crueller - say, making you start the entire game from the very beginning - it's still a harsh flipping of the bird at players who chose the path of least resistance, especially considering the game's fairly high degree of challenge.
