10 Of E3's Worst Video Game Showcases Yet
5. Xbox One Reveal, 2013
The console wars of the current generation started with Microsoft tripping over the first gate spectacularly. All eyes were on Microsoft as they had put out the incredibly successful Xbox 360 and began to innovate in the Kinect's motion sensing controls.
To say the unveiling of the Xbox One let people down would be an understatement. Microsoft, as if embarrassed to present a games console, instead put forth the evolution of Xbox as a... TV device.
Presenters spoke about a new Halo TV series, flipped through to the Price is Right, watched NBA games and received fantasy score updates, while Skyping with friends picture-in-picture. While games were unveiled, such as a brand new Killer Instinct, they felt almost secondary to the idea of a social television experience, with Xbox One given the confusing tagline of "the new watercooler".
Coupled with an embarrassingly high price of $499, forced online connectivity, and confusing digital management of used and borrowed games, Microsoft quickly took steps to repeal and undo everything that happened.
Meanwhile, at the same show, Sony announced their console would have zero online requirements, zero used game controls, and a cheaper price of $399, reaping a standing ovation.
