10 Otherworldly Video Game Enemies That Were Once Human
8. Bloater - The Last Of Us (2013)
The final stage of the Cordyceps Brain Infection renders whatever remains of the victim's humanity a long-faded memory, their frightful current state being anything from human indeed.
To become a Bloater, one has to have been infected for a number of years, cycling through the Runner, Stalker and Clicker stages before entering the last phase, at which point the being is literally more fungus than man. Their bodies are completely covered in a thick fungal crust, and, while they retain a rudimentary humanoid shape, the face and head are now nothing more than a mess of disgusting plated growths.
Bloaters seem to have no consciousness or power of thought beyond simple animal instincts, attacking anything and everything they come across with staggering aggression. Blinded by the fungus, they get around via echolocation (their eerie 'clicking' helping them to do so), and have developed a sense of hearing far superior to that of any healthy human.
Not only does their tough exterior make them incredibly hard to kill, but getting grabbed by one of these atrocities is an instant KO. Not all of them can even be killed, either - which certainly sets them apart from the plain old human enemies you blast your way through.
