10 Otherworldly Video Game Enemies That Were Once Human

6. Zombine - Half-Life 2: Episode One (2006)

A Combine officer made into a zombie by an alien Headcrab. Alyx Vance and Gordon Freeman come across a dead one of these in Half-Life 2: Episode One, and it's a little hard to take it seriously - especially when Alyx proudly christens it a "Zombine". But then a live one shows up and damn near blows you sky-high, letting you know once and for all that these things are no laughing matter.

At first glance, the only difference between a Zombine and a regular zombie is that the 'host' of the former is a member of the Combine Overwatch, and not just some random Joe. In both cases, the Headcrab takes total control of the body it clamps onto, being able to manoeuvre it like a puppet and flail itself at its enemies.

But as their debut clearly demonstrates, Zombines can use grenades, and go full kamikaze by running towards you with one. How would a Headcrab know how to do that? Obviously, the creature is no longer human, but neither must it be completely Headcrab either. And with the technological augmentations characteristic of Overwatch soldiers, that throws another another element into the mix.

Wherever it comes from, there's an intelligence to the Zombine, and an unnerving one at that.
