Humans really don't have the best time in FromSoftware games, and often it's the most innocent characters that suffer the worst of fates.

Seath the Scaleless, an ancient deformed dragon driven mad by centuries of loneliness and resentment, tasks his Channelers with bringing him live specimens on which to conduct his grotesque crystalline experiments. Among the crystal golems, crystal butterflies and numerous others are the slimy, tentacled Pisacas, without a doubt the most tragic of the lot.

You'd assume that Seath would prefer to experiment on his enemies, or those who pose a threat to him. But no, the Pisacas are made entirely from pure, innocent maidens, locked away in the dungeon of his archives and deliberately riled up by dizzying ambient music.

How do we know this? Well, after you cut your way through the crowd, assuming them to be like any other enemy, you find two huddled up in a corner, non-hostile and weeping inconsolably. It's unclear whether all Pisacas can still think and feel, but these two definitely can, and, at this stage, putting them out of their misery is the absolute kindest thing to do.
