9 Outlandish Predictions for the Future of Gaming

3. World of Warcraft is Classified as a Drug

I played WoW for a good couple of years and it robbed me of so many hours of my life that in the end I was scared to check my total playtime; kind of like when you get that phone bill that you know is going to be massive, except instead of paying for it with money, you've paid with units of your life force. MMO's run on dark psychology and are literally designed to condition the player to continue questing indefinitely over gradually increasing level gradients, to keep sinking more and more hours and cash in and to ultimately never, ever, ever, unsubscribe. Honestly, there's only one business model that's similar and that's that of a drug dealer. With that said, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it were one day classified as an illegal virtual substance, along with Farmville and internet pornography.
