10 Outrageously Dirty Secrets You Won’t Believe Are Hidden In Children’s Games

10. Vulgar Swearing €“ Secret Writer's Society

Although it may bring up images of a bunch of shifty looking men with pipes and a penchant for metaphoricals when you imagine a secret writer's society, that's not what this was. Originally released in 1998, The Secret Writer's society is a piece of software/game released by Panasonic that was designed to encourage kids to learn how to write by letting them type, then read back the stuff the kids had written in a lovely robotic tone. Yep, I imagine more than a few kids had fun with this one. Many a 'poo' and a 'bum' will have been entered into this software willingly by the children using it, but what these kids didn't expect was the software to actually start doing something similar for them. Due to what Panasonic claims was a programming bug, Secret Writer's Society goes vulgar, throwing in random curse words to spice up messages. This is achievable by typing in more than four lines and €“ if you double click afterwards €“ the Secret Writer's society will randomly replaced words with such things as 'c*ck', 'asshole' and masturbation. Apparently these words remained in the game as Panasonic compiled a list of words that kids probably shouldn't be experiencing/using, but how they managed to appear randomly in the text is a mystery. You can just imagine it now... "The big black dog loved to play with his C*ck. His name was Jet and his fur was lovely, shiny and the colour of night. At night, Jet liked to sleep in his basket and go to Masturbate." Scarcely topics suitable for a piece of educational gaming software, I think you'll agree.
