10 Overlooked Video Games By Great Publishers
8. Vagrant Story - Square Enix
Square Enix is of course fondly regarded for publishing hit RPG franchises Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, and Kingdom Hearts, but it's about damn time that players finally gave Vagrant Story its due.
Released for PlayStation in February 2000, Vagrant Story offered a very different RPG experience compared to the Final Fantasy games, relying more on environmental storytelling, touting a much less-forgiving difficulty level, and placing a greater emphasis on exploration.
All this, combined with the more complex combat system and lack of towns, shops, and NPCs, likely contributed to the game failing to make the same commercial splash as Square's established RPG franchises.
But on its own terms, it felt massively ahead of its time upon release, pushing the PS1 hardware to near-breaking point. You'd barely know it, though, given how little Square Enix had done to celebrate the game over the last two-plus decades.
Fans have passionately called for the publisher to remake or at least remaster Vagrant Story, but considering that it didn't make huge commercial waves - being overshadowed by the proximate releases of Final Fantasy VIII and IX - you shouldn't hold your breath.
