10 Overlooked Video Games By Great Publishers
3. Prey - Bethesda Softworks
Bethesda is one of the undeniable publishing giants of the modern gaming industry, with Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Doom, and Wolfenstein among their most iconic AAA franchises.
But in 2017 they hoped to launch a new IP with the trippy sci-fi FPS Prey - a delirious, beautifully designed, genre-bending title that received rave reviews from many major outlets.
Despite this, Prey was a massive commercial disappointment, a fact attributed to numerous factors: Bethesda's baffling decision to barely market the game, the difficulty of selling immersive sims to mainstream audiences, and the publisher withholding review copies until the release date.
It also didn't help that naming the game Prey suggested it was linked to 2006's FPS of the same name, creating market confusion and leaving some players unsure if they needed to play that game first.
All in all, Prey is one of the most creative FPS of its generation, yet it barely made a dent compared to Bethesda's flagship titles.
