10 Perfect Video Game Stories (That Were Ruined By The Sequels)
7. The True Cataclysm - World of Warcraft: The Wrath Of The Lich King
The World of Warcraft's community generally agrees that the game's golden years lasted until the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack. Afterwards, Cataclysm was released, and with it, a catastrophic downfall of the storyline.
The first two expansions followed the original plot of the Warcraft games pretty closely, tying up loose ends and building upon the legacy of the MMO's roots.
By the end of Wrath of the Lich King, the series was at a point where most major characters reached the conclusion of their personal arcs, and the world was rich with lore that was only waiting to be expanded upon.
But what did Cataclysm do? Well, it took that carefully crafted setup and threw it in the garbage!
The expansion is infamous for being the sequel that flipped all parts of WoW on its head. From gameplay to famous locations and plots, everything was torn apart and rebuilt from scratch.
For the story, it meant that all the progress made by its predecessors meant absolutely nothing. The expansion featured a ton of retcons and plot holes that not only undermined the original story but also made people lose interest in playing since apparently nothing they did matter.
Cataclysm sounds about right.
