Halo games are an interesting example of great storytelling being ruined by sequels because all the sequels are actually decent to amazing titles—it's just that with each new release since the past plotlines become more convoluted and messy.

Halo 3 was the perfect conclusion to the original trilogy, as it showed all the conflicts being resolved and Master Chief getting a proper send-off without being sacrificed in the process.

Then all of the sequels and prequels started coming out, and while on their own they were good games, they all began to complicate the plot and fill it with unexplained retcons.

Because the Halo series has existed for so long and has been adapted into so many different formats beyond just video games, Bungie made the decision to make newer game releases take precedence over any other type of media that came before them to make writing the story easier. However, as a result of this decision, the original trilogy was subjected to a huge wave of retcons.

Once Bungie handed the franchise to over 343, the new studio tried to remedy this by attempting to unify all of Halo's lore, but at this point the damage had already been done.
