10 Perfect Video Game Stories (That Were Ruined By The Sequels)
5. A Bachelor Who Erased His Bride-To-Be - Yakuza 3
All of the Yakuza games are a joyride of action and craziness, which is why you don't necessarily want it to end.
However, speaking from a narrative standpoint, the game met its perfect conclusion in Yakuza 2, with Kiryu finally more or less retired from gang fighting and settled down with a family consisting of his cop girlfriend Sayama and his adoptive daughter Haruka.
Until Yakuza 3 came into picture...
The series had the perfect opportunity to let Kiryu's end here and let him enjoy a happy ending, but since he was the main protagonist and apparently no one was able to fill in his shoes, Yakuza's writers decided to pull a quick one and completely dismantled the set-up they created.
The sequel starts with Sayama leaving Kiryu due to an "unexpected" call of duty overseas, and Haruka moves with Kiryu into an orphanage, making them feel more like a work duo instead of a family.
The change here is so drastic that you can't help but feel like the writers disregarded all they had established solely so that they could continue the series with Kiryu as a protagonist.
Which stings even more when you realize they let him retire anyway a few games later.
