The Inca Empire was the largest empire the pre-Columbian Americas had ever seen. Spanning over 500,000 square miles and connected by over 25,000 miles of roadways (many of which are still visible today), the Inca Empire hosted a population of well over 10 million people. It was an absolute military powerhouse, but within 100 years of its rise to dominance, the empire collapsed.

So what happened?

After Inca ruler Huayna Capac (along with millions of others) died after an outbreak of disease, his two sons, Atahualpa and Huascar, ignited a civil war, each trying to claim the vacant throne for themselves.

Atahualpa eventually prevailed, but not long after, he and his forces encountered Francisco Pizarro and his conquistadors. Just a year later, Atahualpa was killed. Over the next few decades, the Spanish destroyed what remained of the Inca Empire.

This would be an utterly fascinating backdrop for an Assassin's Creed game. Imagine it: facing off against conquistadors in the Andes. It's enticing, right?

What's more, the Inca Empire hosted several magnificent cities, including the capital, Cusco, as well as Vilcabamba (the capital after Cusco fell), Machu Picchu, Kuelap, Sacsayhuaman, and maybe -- just maybe -- the legendary lost city of Paititi.
