10 Pointless Super Mario Power Up Clones

9. Fire Flower + Superball Flower

Mario Cape Leaf
Nintendo

The Superball Flower debuted in Super Mario Land. This plant turns you into Superball Mario, allowing you to shoot projectiles to destroy enemies. When phrased like that, it sounds indistinguishable to the Fire Flower. However, there are a couple of differences.

The Superball can collect coins, which is handy when they are located in hazardous areas. Although a fireball can only bounce a little, the Superball can be launched in any direction, even upward.

Also, the Superball will change its path when it hits a wall, object, or enemy. The catch is you can only fire one Superball at a time while the Fire Flower allows the player to hurl two fireballs at once.

It may not be a exact copy of the Fire Flower but it was deemed so similar, it didn't appear in another game for three decades. The Superball Flower may be mostly forgotten but it has a lot of potential if used in a 3D world.

Since you can hurl the Superball upward, it could be used to hit enemies on higher platforms or to strike switches that are otherwise inaccessible. Hopefully, this item will return in future games and be put to greater use.
