6. Male Combee
Combee can evolve into Vespiquen, a well enough designed Bug Pokémon that would have slotted in nicely with the other decidedly ‘meh’ Bug Pokémon were it not for this evolutionary quirk; only the female Combees can evolve.
It’s easy to see what they’re going for here, with the males serving as the drones or worker bees and Vespiquen rising above as their queen. To be honest, it’s great to see this level of thought going into an evolution instead of the standard ‘reach level X’.
However, following the hive symbolism, the males are much more plentiful. This means that searching for Combee - already a bit of a chore - can make you feel a bit like a drone yourself; endlessly doing a repetitive task with a limited chance of any payoff.
Way back in Gen I, before gendered Pokémon were even fully in the game, we had Nidoking and Nidoqueen. By taking a leaf out of their book, Game Freak could implement a male version of Vespiquen, possibly by utilising the drone theme to make a ‘stronger than the sum of our parts’ design.
If they don’t, Male Combee is doomed to go down as one of the worst Bugs ever.
