By all accounts, war is generally not considered "a fun time". Countless documentaries, films and real life recollections can attest to that.
Yet whilst war games are quite a popular staple in gaming, they usually offer that disconnect from the real atrocities and fears many had over it.
That is, until Medal of Honour: Frontline came out.
The Normandy beach landings are regarded as one of the worst campaigns in military history, despite the Allied victory over them. Saving Private Ryan showed us that, but Frontline puts you in the perspective of a soldier landing at Omaha Beach.
We weren't ready. We knew what to expect, but once you're in control it's absolute mayhem. In a realistic regard, it's top notch in its recreation.
To a gamer, it was disorientating, scary and absolute carnage. In that sense, mission accomplished.
Call of Duty also paid worthy tribute with its WWII entry in 2017, and it looks incredible in the current generation of graphics, but Frontline threw it at us first.
If not a celebration of war, then it was a worthy example of the true chaos that war brings to many lives.
