Minecraft is one of the biggest games of all time, so a spin off is always going to be big news. Right now though, no one’s really talking about Minecraft Dungeons, though that is subject to change.

Previously, Minecraft Story Mode did okay, but it didn’t exactly lend itself to a point and click story adventure, being so narratively sparse to begin with. Minecraft Earth, an augmented reality free to play game dropping very soon, had a well received beta but seems less like an actual game than it does a proof of concept.

Minecraft Dungeons though, slated for a 2020 release, feels like a spin off which can eventually survive on its own.

Despite using the Minecraft name and blocky aesthetic, there’s no crafting of any sort here. Instead, it’s a dungeon crawler set in the universe. Much like how Minecraft was many players’ first ever game, this is being set up as an intro to dungeon crawlers.

There’s simplistic looting, no class restrictions on armour and weapons, and generally a more family friendly feel than most crawlers.

Hardcore fans of the genre may not be interested, but there’s definitely a player base of newcomers out there waiting.
