A Star Wars game is no longer the hot property it might once have been. After the divisive nature of the new trilogy, the lootbox PR disaster of Battlefront II and a thoroughly bland looking central character, the hype for Fallen Order is not as high as it might have been.

Still, it’s a Star Wars game, and it’s breaking the trend by going single player too, so there’s still a lot of anticipation.

It stars Padawan Cal Kestis, a Jedi who escaped during Order 66 and is now on the run from the Galactic Empire. It’s a decent premise, if a little basic on the surface level, but with a universe as expansive as Star Wars, you feel there’s a lot developers Respawn could do with it.

Their recent projects Apex Legends and Titanfall certainly prove they can break boundaries, but there’s always a little bit of doubt hanging over Star Wars games these days.

They still don’t seem to be taking advantage of the dismemberment opportunity the lightsabers afford, and the combat doesn’t look too fluid. It’s got more of a Dark Souls vibe when an ‘Arkham with lightsabers’ approach may have been better. The jury’s still out.
